As a consequence from the discussion presented
so far, the following preliminary conclusion can be drawn: explanations of
scrambling will have to a) avoid any assumptions of traces in the default
argument position and b) allow for a structural distinction between arguments to
explain effects on syntactic movement. The first requirement will naturally put
more emphasis on presyntactic mechanisms, i.e. information stored in the
lexicon. The second one demands for a slight elaboration of VP-structure.
